On 16 April 2014, while carrying 476 people, mostly consisted of secondary school students from Danwon Highschool, a south Korean ferry was wrecked and sank in the midst of deep blue ocean. Even though the accident happened in daytime and marine police was announced just after the accident, only almost 200 of them could be rescued. They are mostly rescued not by the people government sent but by private fishing boats. This terrible tragedy that led to the death of more than 200 people mostly young students occurred on the route to Jeju from Incheon. The students were heading for a school trip full of joy and happiness not even thinking of the devastating incidence. However, the accident they faced was terrible to be recorded as one of the accident that killed many people. This tragedy let people on the whole globe turn their eyes to Korea, a small country.
The mournful facet of this incident is that even though more people could have been saved, because of the misdeed of the captain and navigators, students could not survive. The fact is that although the captain and crew are responsible to remain passengers safe in emergency situation, they escaped at first place when they acknowledged something is wrong to the ship. Because they have more experience on ships and are familiar with those emergency situations, they could realize that people should go out of the ship, but actually they, just before the ship began to sank, said to passengers to remain silent right in their seats. Just people who did not believe the announcement and escaped could survive and went back to bosom of their families, but people who obeyed to what crews said left in the ship and were dead.
This accident also aroused publics mistrust toward the government. The late arrival of South Korean coast guard and ROK Navy ships, backed by helicopters contributed to increase in number of people died in the ship. Moreover, in the process of finding missed corps, Korean coast guards showed lack of responsibility. Most citizens could not understand why they could not save people inside the ship even though they could save them if they break a single slit of window, Although the coast guard¡¯s failure in finding corps and rescuing people was their obligation and they did not while they could, the major media are trying their best to hinder the main fact of their fault that definitely deserves blame.
